Franconia, VA

Franconia is the term that was long ago applied to what is now the part of Fairfax County served by the Post Office in Alexandria.  It includes a great variety of homes built over many years.  Its Kingstowne area is the newest and most planned portion of the community and its post office serves the newer areas in Kingstowne.

Geographic Location

Franconia extends from the Huntington area, in the east, near the city of Alexandria to I-95 on the west.  It lies south of the Beltway (I-495) and extends southward approximately four miles to just north of Fort Belvoir.

Franconia is a well-wooded area with wildlife abounding.  The deer below was one of five in my yard in the spring of 2016.  Check out Google maps or Bing maps and notice the many wooded areas where nature may be enjoyed.

Transportation

This is Franconia’s single most outstanding feature.  If you like interstate access, you have multiple connections to I-95, I-395, and I-495.  If those roads are congested, you may choose from a great variety of alternatives from Route 1 to Telegraph Road to Beulah Street to Franconia Road.  Franconia-Springfield Parkway provides another alternative to link to the west to circumvent I-495 congestion.

With Springfield, Van Dorn Street, Telegraph Road, and Route 1 entrances, I-495 provides easy access to Joint Bases at Andrews and Anacostia/Bolling via the multi-lane Wilson Bridge.  Both are 20-25 minutes away in normal traffic with the slower rush hour eased somewhat by the bridge’s express/through lanes.

Metro can be accessed from stations at Springfield/Franconia, Van Dorn Street, and Huntington.  Buses tie these stations into the community and Metro takes you rapidly to Reagan National Airport, Crystal City, the Pentagon, Rosslyn, and the District of Columbia.

Recreation

Nature enthusiasts will love the wetlands of Huntley Meadows, a major stopover for migrating birds, located just off Telegraph Road.  The Lee District Recreation Center provides sports fields, indoor swimming and workout areas, Summer Concerts, a Treehouse, a Spray Park and a great 4th of July fireworks show.
If you love golf, there are two courses of note, Greendale (an excellent Fairfax County course) and Fort Belvoir, with two 18-hole courses, Gunston and Woodlawn.  If you want to vary your experience, you might try the Top Golf in Kingstowne.
